Stretching

Date Posted: 2008-09-26 15:35:08

The importance of a quality pre-round stretching session cannot be stressed enough.  Due to age and lack of excerise, it is easy for our bodies to feel tight when trying to swing a golf club.  If you are one of those people that plays 3 or 4 holes before feeling loose, you know what I am talking about. Try these tips:
  • Include at least 30 minutes of exercise into your daily routine.
  • Do yoga or pilates to elongate your muscles and increase flexibility.
  • Stretch out all major golf muscles in your arms, back, chest and legs before every practice session and/or round of golf.  Hold all stretches for a minimum of 30-60 seconds.
  • Make a few swings with a weighted club in both directions to work both sides of your body.
If you incorporate at least one of these tips, you are sure to see your flexibility improve and your body hold up better to the stressors of golf. For more tips and valuable golf instruction, please visit The Island Golf School, located in Hilton Head Island, SC.  We are here to help you build a better game!

Golf Ball or Meteorite?

Date Posted: 2008-09-16 14:02:32

If you have ever played after a heavy rain, you may have encountered soft fairways that seem to eat up your golf ball like a meteor crashing into the earth.  When your ball is plugged into the ground like this it is known as an "embedded ball."  While it would seem impossible to have to play the ball from this lie, all hope is not lost.  According to the Rules of Golf, "a ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground in any closely mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole.  The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green.  'Closely mown area' means any part of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to  fairway height or less." For more tips on the Rules of Golf or to improve your golf swing through personalized instruction, come experience one of the many golf schools offered at The Island Golf School, located on Hilton Head Island, SC.

Wrap Those Wrists

Date Posted: 2008-09-08 10:22:02

A great way to improve your putting stroke is to eliminate any unnecessary movement in your wrists.  With the improved turf management of today, greens roll much truer than when Arnold Palmer was in his prime.  He and his contemporaries used a lot of wrist action in their strokes to compensate for slow, bumby greens.  If you were to use that type of stroke today, you would have extreme difficulty controlling your distance with the putter. To reduce or eliminate hinging in your wrists, grip your putter and then wrap a thick rubberband around your wrists.  If you hinge your wrists, the rubberband will provide resistance to help keep those wrists quiet during your stroke. At The Island Golf School, located on Hilton Head Island, SC, you can improve your putting through one of our full-day Short Game Golf Schools.  Spend a day with us around the greens and you will develop a confident, reliable short game to help lower your scores.

Is It Safe to Ask?

Date Posted: 2008-09-05 15:21:25

You are playing in a competitive round and you are not sure as to the location of the flagstick on the green.  So you ask your competitor where the flagstick is positioned.  Wait... Did you just violate a rule? According to the Rules of Golf, "advice" is defined as "any counsel or suggestion that could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of a club or the method of making a stroke.  Information on the Rules or on matters of public information, such as the position of hazards or the flagstick on the putting green, is not advice. Based on that definition, you did not violate the Rules by asking for the location of the pin, because it is considered public information. If you want to improve your knowledge of the Rules, as well as your golf game, you need to spend a few days at The Island Golf School, located on Hilton Head Island, SC.  Our instructors will help you fine-tune your game through quality golf instruction both on the practice tee and on the golf course.  What are you waiting for?  Reserve your spot today!

Your Favorite Club

Date Posted: 2008-09-03 15:35:40

Most golfers will tell you that they do in fact have a favorite club.  The driver, seven-iron, or wedge are common faves.  However, if there is one club that should be at the top of the list, it should be the putter. Putting accounts for nearly half of the shots we take during a single round of golf.  Yet we spend countless hours whacking balls on the driving range.  Instead, we should be spending more time on the putting green.  While putting may not be as exciting as bombing drives with your buddies, I am reminded of the saying, "Drive for show, Putt for dough!"  Which, if you heed my advice, translates into money being transferred from your buddies' wallets into yours. The Island Golf School, located on Hilton Head Island, SC, offers Short Game Golf Schools to make more putts and increase that cash flow.  Spend a day with us and start making your buddies wish they hadn't taken that bet.

Big Muscles

Date Posted: 2008-08-29 11:54:05

The game of golf today seems to be obsessed with distance.  How far can I hit this little ball?  300 yards? Why not 400 yards?  The Tour Pros make it look so easy.  The reason that guys like Bubba Watson, J.B. Holmes, and, oh yeah... Tiger Woods, are able to hit the ball such a long ways is because they generate faster clubhead speeds than their competitors.   One important component to increasing clubhead speed lies in which muscles are used.  To generate the greatest amount of clubhead speed, you need to incorporate the larger muscles of the golf swing.  Your chest, triceps, and core create stability and speed without sacrificing control of the clubhead.  If you are trying to generate speed with the smaller muscles of your hands, your clubhead speed and accuracy will be sporadic.  Additionally, remember to relax these muscles in your setup.  Tension will kill your distance.  The Island Golf School, located on Hilton Head Island, SC, helps golfers of all skill levels to achieve their goals in golf through excellent golf instruction.  Most often, these goals are centered around adding distance.  If you consider yourself to be a distance-challenged individual, let our experienced professionals evaluate your swing and provide you with the means to bomb it off the tee.  Remember to keep the swing smooth and use those big muscles!
